There has been some press recently about how poor our English is and how we are getting worse at Mathematics. It is probably just as well then that it is getting harder and harder to get into an Australian university, as an Australian entrant that is.
Foreign students are a good business for Universities. They get funds from the government and funds from all foreign students. Foreign students pay cash, there is no Hex. Foreign populations in our universities averages out at about 40% and in some cases exceeds 50%.
In general foreign students don't, even if their work is not up to standard. This means that standards are dropping and that our degrees are not worth as much as they should be. It also means that internationally our reputations are also falling. Some universities have even been caught out in this but nothing ever really happens.
So how can we meet the demand for say maths teachers in high schools when there are less and less Australians able to enter university because there are some fewer places? Easy, we import foreign teachers of course, just ask Kevin.
